Pompey were booed off after beginning their FA Cup defence with a 0-0 draw at home to Coca-Cola Championship Bristol City last weekend.

Manager Adams has overseen only three wins from his 16 games in charge at Fratton Park and Portsmouth are without a victory in four Barclays Premier League outings going into tomorrow's home clash with Manchester City.

Former England captain Adams said: "The supporters pay their money and can say what they like, and pretty much do. It is their prerogative.

"I get on with my job. I fight and work for this football club.

"I have a good chairman and a good owner. I am just going to battle on with my job and do the best I can with the resources I have.

"I am working the club to the best of my ability. If the fans don't like it it's up to them. I am doing the best I can. I'm the first one in and the last one to leave every day. I will keep working until I am not wanted anymore."

He added: "I don't know about being in a relegation battle at the end of the season - we are in one now.

"There are 14 clubs in the league scrapping for relegation or UEFA Cup places. That is the way the league is.

"That is the truth of the matter so we will keep on scrapping."

Adams also backed City counterpart Mark Hughes who is himself under pressure at Eastlands.

"Management is the profession I have chosen and I love it to bits," he said. "I'll be thriving on it, fighting all the way and I know Mark Hughes is a fighter as well.

"He is tremendous man, who goes about his business very professionally and I am sure he is taking everything in his stride.

"Mark is a good man. I have met him numerous times through the League Manager's Association and doing his manager's licence at Warwick University."

Adams is desperately seeking reinforcements ahead of the transfer deadline with Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton on his list of targets.

Pompey's options have been further depleted by Jermain Defoe's return to Tottenham earlier this week but Adams has been boosted by England defender Glen Johnson signing a new four-and-half-year contract yesterday.

Johnson makes his comeback from an ankle injury against City and Adams said: "It's great news Glen has decided to sign a new contract.

"I am delighted to have him here and I want him to stay for a long time.

"This is a good place for him. He has come back into the England frame since he has been here.

"Glen has applied himself really well. He is always desperate to play and gets frustrated when he cannot. He has been very good for this club and this club had been very good for him."
