Kieron Dyer revealed Newcastle were determined to make up for the bore draw against Middlesbrough in this morning's thrilling 4-2 UEFA Cup first-leg win over AZ Alkmaar.
The Magpies take a healthy advantage into the second leg in Holland thanks to an AZ own goal, a brilliant finish from Dyer and a double from Obafemi Martins.
"We were disappointing here against Middlesbrough. We were flat and that resulted in the crowd being flat," Dyer said on five.
"We came out of the blocks very fast. To be three goals up after 25 minutes was the perfect start."
Dyer shone despite playing in a position he admits being uncomfortable in.
He said: "I was playing right wing which, everyone knows, I don't like playing.
"But, as long as the team wins and progresses to the next round, I don't mind where I play."
The midfielder is cautiously optimistic of his side's prospects of progressing to the quarter-finals, warning: "If they beat us 2-0, they go through
"But I fully expect us to go over there and cause them a few problems."
