The Romania international came close to joining the Eternal City giants last week but the deal broke down.

"It seemed everything was done and we were all really enthusiastic about Mutu's possible arrival," said Totti.

"Destiny has not wanted this to happen but it's not the fault of the club."

Roma, who finished runners-up in Serie A last season, have yet to find a replacement for Mancini, who joined Internazionale this summer.

Bayern Munich striker Lukas Podolski and Marseille forward Djibril Cisse have been linked with a move to the Italian capital, and Totti added: "The coach and the club have spoken of two possible acquisitions, but we will have to wait and see."

Meanwhile the 31-year-old is hoping to be fully fit for the first competitive game of the season, the Supercoppa Italiana next month.

"My aim is to play at the Supercoppa against Inter," said Totti. "But I will have to wait and see.

"The doctor must give me the okay before I can play."
