The 24-year-old, who has six caps for his country, has signed a contract tying him to the Volkswagen-Arena until 2010.

He told the club's official website: "It is an honour for me to be allowed to play in Wolfsburg.

"The Bundesliga is at a high level. I will put a lot of effort in so that I can strengthen the team."

Hasebe will become the first Japanese player to appear for the Wolves.

He added: "I believe the Bundesliga has the best conditions for me to further develop my game.

"I think it's very important that I quickly feel at home here. My aim is to learn German as quickly as possible and settle in Wolfsburg."
