NEW Socceroo James Troisi has not given up hope of playing alongside Mark Viduka for Australia but may have to leave St James Park to make it happen.
The youngster is anxious to impress for Pim Verbeek’s side against Singapore on Saturday night with the potential reward being a place in the squad for the China game next week.
Verbeek has been quoted as saying Troisi needs to find first team football sooner rather than later and the youngster will do all he can to keep his international ambitions in tact.
Speaking from Singapore today, the striker said: “Yeah, Mark (Viduka) wished me all the best and that. Hopefully we will see him again for Australia. That would be fantastic (to see him carry on and play alongside him).”
As for match preparations for the Singapore clash, Troisi said: “There’s a few of the boys still to arrive but I’m really looking forward to the game.
“Training was cancelled this morning as the pitch was waterlogged but hopefully we can get out there this afternoon.
“It’s good that Pim has got all the young boys together for this one. Having Harry Kewell here is a real boost for the boys as well.
“I will do my best on Saturday if I get a run and then we’ll have to wait and see. It would love to be involved (against China).”
Troisi said none of the youngsters had yet been told by Verbeek whether they would be required for China duty at this stage.
Troisi has left club side Newcastle in the middle of a tense relegation battle and although he headed for Singapore with Kevin Keegan’s blessing, it isn’t yet clear whether he will be part of King Kev’s future plans.
The player’s deal runs out with Newcastle at the end of the season and he is not ruling anything in or out at this stage. He has clearly taken Verbeek’s comments on board though.
He said: “I want to play first team football. I have to look at my options. My contract ends at the end of the season. We will have to wait and see what happens.”
