Troisi left Victory before the start of the 2014-15 season to join Belgian side Zulte-Waregem where he played 21 games and scored five goals. During that season the 28-year-old was the hero for the Socceroos in the 2015 Asian Cup Final, scoring the winner in extra time to claim the trophy for Australia

And after the experience he had in the Belgian province, Troisi went on to have stints in Saudi Arabia for Al-Ittihad and Chinese Super League side Liaoning Whowin with just 11 games shared at both clubs.

Troisi reflected on the past two years in Asia and the Middle East, bluntly stating it was a tumultuous time and was relieved to be back at his former club. Recent reports suggested he would be back in his hometown Adelaide, but explained why he returned to Melbourne.

“There was a lot of talk and discussion with a handful of A-League clubs, for me coming back to Victory was an easy choice,” Troisi conceded.

“I’ve been here before, I really enjoyed it and it’s a fantastic club. Also the fans, when I look back at my career, this club and being here a couple of years back was when I enjoyed my football the most.

“The last season, I didn’t enjoy it at all, we have a good bunch of boys, the people in and around the club are fantastic.

“I can’t wait to show the fans what I can do again, we’ll push for the title this season and it’ll be tough. A lot of A-League clubs are built and have stronger squads and I’m really looking forward to it.”

Only six players from Victory’s 2013-14 squad still remain in the squad to date – Leigh Broxham, Nick Ansell, Lawrence Thomas, Jason Geria, Scott Galloway and Rashid Mahazi.

Troisi also hinted his return had something to do with the desire of returning to the Socceroos, the last game he played was in November 2015, a 4-0 win away to Bangladesh in the World Cup Qualifiers.

The Asian Cup hero hadn’t been in contact with Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou but believed he would be “happy with this move”. Troisi will also be reunited with players he had dealings with in past Socceroos camps – Ollie Bozanic and Carl Valeri.

“Every single Aussie wants to play for the national team, for me this move is purely about football. In the back of my mind, Socceroos is there,” he said.

“I moved to the middle east as well, so there’s been quite a long period where it hadn’t worked out the way I wanted it. That’s football, but this decision is purely football and I know I’ll get looked after here.

“I think so (2013-14 peaked), the main reason was because I was comfortable on and off the pitch, I really enjoyed myself and I was physically getting looked after, it was one of the reasons getting back to Victory.”
