FC Twente have suspended midfielder Theo Janssen for two months and imposed a fine after he was involved in a car crash under the influence of alcohol recently.
Janssen was driving when his car was involved in an accident after the match against Vitesse Arnhem on November 21, with one of his passengers still in hospital with injuries.
A blood test carried out by police after the crash - in which Janssen suffered a broken nose and minor cuts and bruises - revealed excess alcohol in his system.
The club issued a statement today saying they were "very strongly disappointed" by Janssen's actions.
Chairman Joop Munsterman said: "It is unacceptable for a professional footballer to drink and drive. It endangered himself and those around him.
"Also, a footballer has to be aware that he is a role model to young people."
The statement on the club's website said: "In consultation with FC Twente, Theo Janssen has decided to impose the maximum fine on himself within the player's contract."
The club also said the player - whose fine will go to charity - will be suspended from club competitions "for a period of two months until January 31, 2010" and work at a rehabilitation centre for victims of car crashes.
"I have been extremely stupid," Janssen told his club's website. "I had been drinking beer after the game to celebrate the victory then still got into the car.
"It should never have happened."
As for his punishment, Janssen added: "I have harmed the name of FC Twente and football. I'm willing to do anything to make amends."
