Carney, 25, was transfer listed in the off-season after falling out with Blades boss Kevin Blackwell that saw him relegated to the reserves with no hope of a first team start.

Carney had been signed by United by Bryan Robson from Sydney FC but when he was replaced by Blackwell, Carney's opportunities dried up.

He spent six months on loan at Norwich City last season but despite the limited game-time he has continued to shine for Australia with a scorching goal against Ireland earlier this month.

He now joins former England boss Steve McClaren and fellow Socceroo Nikita Rukavytsya at the Dutch giants, once home also to Luke Wilkshire until his move to Dinamo Moscow.

The club today confirmed the move officially on their website after it was first revealed by au.fourfourtwo.com on Tuesday.
