The Enschede side were 2-0 up by half-time thanks to goals from Marko Arnautovic and Peter Wisgerhof, and that became three through Eljero Elia on the hour mark.

Fouad Idabdelhay pulled one back for NAC two minutes later, but substitute Romano Denneboom rounded off the scoring for in stoppage time for Steve McClaren's men, who leapfrog Ajax in the table.

Twente dominated from the off, with Elia's shot in the first minute blocked by Tyrone Loran and Kenneth Perez's corner headed over by Slobodan Rajkovic.

Perez came close after nine minutes but NAC goalkeeper Jelle ten Rouwelaar did just enough to parry clear.

At the other end, a rare NAC attack saw Idabdelhay find Martijn Reuser on the edge of the box, but his shot flew over.

Twente deservedly broke the deadlock after 22 minutes when Ronnie Stam played a lofted pass forward which was helped on its way and into the net by the head of Arnautovic.

Nine minutes later, a Theo Janssen corner caused chaos in the NAC area, with Wisgerhof taking advantage to fire home low from 12 yards.

Elia put Twente out of sight 15 minutes after the break, scoring with his weaker right foot with a low shot that gave Ten Rouwelaar no chance.

Two minutes later Idabdelhay hooked home to give the NAC contingent something to cheer about, but the barrage continued at the other end with Ten Rouwelaar denying Arnautovic from close range.

And it was 4-1 in the final minute as Twente captain Blaise Nkufo intercepted a backpass from Donny Gorter before picking out Denneboom who finished from 10 yards.
