YOUNG Socceroos coach Jan Versleijen has admitted the teenagers just didn't bring their best game to the U20 World Cup and now face being booted out as a result.
Australia suffered its second successive loss overnight with a 3-0 defeat against Costa Rica, a side beaten 5-0 by Brazil just a few days before.
The baby Roos' World Cup record now stands at conceding five goals and scoring just one from the spot in their two defeats...and they still have the daunting prospect of facing Brazil at the weekend.
Coach Jan Versleijen admitted he was bitterly disappointed after the match.
"We had high expectations for this World Cup, from the players and staff to people in Australia," said Versleijen.
"But we also knew that playing in this group was not easy and if we want to be at the highest level and if you want to get results everyone has to be at their highest level and that's something we were rally lacking in these two games.
""The result was extremely disappointing. I think the way we started this game was good. We tried to put pressure on Costa Rica and we tried to make them play long balls and it worked out well for the first 30 or so minutes
"But after that Costa Rica started to take over the game a bit more, especially in the midfield and that resulted in the free kick."
He added: "Even at half time we had the feeling that we could change the result and we started to get back into it in the second half. We controlled the game, got some half chances.
"We brought on Tahj Minniecon to add some pace and skill but he was sent off after five minutes and then it was very difficult playing against Costa Rica with 10 men and 1-0 down."
Australia now has the slimmest of chances of advancing to the knockout phase, needing a win against Brazil in its last game as well as other results to go their way - teams have advanced to the last 16 with three points in each of the last three FIFA U-20 World Cups.
But Versleijen said the focus had to be only on the Brazil match.
"You should always be positive but you should also be realistic," he said.
"First we should get our heads up and be strong enough to face Brazil and get the best possible result. We don't want to go back to Australia with no points.''
