But Turkey's clubs are set to play in the Europa League and Champions League next season, as it stands, with UEFA stating there is nothing in their rules to prevent any side taking part given the current stage of the investigation.

Fenerbahce president Aziz Yildirim was one of several people arrested earlier this month as part of an investigation into claims that matches were rigged during last season.

The group included officials and players from a number of clubs and followed police raids in several cities.

Thousands of Fenerbahce supporters took to the Istanbul streets on Sunday to voice support for Yildirim and other club directors involved in the investigation.

Fenerbahce pipped Trabzonspor to the Super Lig title last season but could face being stripped of that and thrown out of Europe in future if corruption charges and convictions follow the initial investigation.

UEFA are in communication with the TFF, European football's governing body confirmed in a statement, saying they are "monitoring the situation on a daily basis".

"There is no doubt that this is a complex case which is still evolving," UEFA's statement said, "but the matches under suspicion clearly fall within the sporting jurisdiction of the TFF and the legal jurisdiction of the Turkish judicial system.

"UEFA therefore cannot comment on any potential outcomes.

"With regard to the participation of Turkish clubs in UEFA club competitions, UEFA has full confidence in the TFF to submit to UEFA the names of the clubs to be entered based purely on sporting merit, and to take the necessary strong action in this case with the information at its disposal.

"Given the information received so far by UEFA there is nothing according to the UEFA statutes or regulations that leads UEFA to refuse entry to any of the clubs currently involved in the investigations in Turkey.

"UEFA wishes to underline that even after admission to a UEFA competition a decision to exclude a club from a competition, or from any future European competitions for a number of years, can be made at any time if it transpires that the club in question obtained qualification via manipulated or fixed matches."
