OH Jang-eun came off the bench to score the winner for Ulsan Hyundai Horang-i as the South Koreans defeated Beijing Guoan 1-0.
Ulsan needed to win to keep alive their hopes of progressing from Group E and Oh ensured they took all three points when he pounced on a rebound in the 69th minute in the Asian Champions League clash at Ulsan Munsu Football Stadium today.
Goalkeeper Kim Young-kwang also played his part in the win as he saved a late Huang Bowen penalty.
The visitors almost got off to the ideal start when Joel Griffiths unleashed a drive from 30 yards that smashed against the underside of the crossbar with Kim stranded.
After that chance, Ulsan gradually started to take control of the game and should have gone ahead midway through the first half when Almir saw his shot blocked on the line before the Brazilian striker sent another effort high over the bar with just the goalkeeper to beat.
Lee Dong-won went close for Ulsan 10 minutes before the break but his goal-bound header was nodded away by Zhang Yonghai.
The hosts maintained their dominance after the restart as Beijing goalkeeper Yang Zhi did well to deny FYR Macedonian midfielder Slavco Georgievski before saving a Hyun Young-min free-kick.
But he was finally beaten with 21 minutes remaining when Almir shot onto the crossbar but Oh followed up to fire home from point-blank range.
There was drama to come six minutes before the end however when when Lee Dong-won was adjudged to have brought down Griffiths in the area but Kim dived to his left to save Huang's weak penalty.
