EPL WRAP: Manchester United moved within a point of leaders Chelsea as Paul Scholes' injury-time goal earned them a 1-0 win over Manchester City and the Blues lost to Spurs.
Scholes headed in Patrice Evra's cross as United inflicted last-gasp derby heartbreak on their rivals for the third time this season in the day's lunchtime kick-off.
The pressure told on Chelsea as an inspired Spurs performance earned them a 2-1 win in the evening kick-off which was more comfortable than the scoreline suggests.
Jermain Defoe opened the scoring with a penalty after Chelsea captain John Terry was harshly penalised for handball and Gareth Bale cut in from the left wing to make it 2-0 a minute before half-time.
Terry was sent off after collecting a second yellow card for hacking down Bale, and Roman Pavlyuchenko missed two fine chances to extend Spurs' lead either side of Frank Lampard's late consolation.
The result lifts Tottenham two points clear of City and into fourth place.
Fraizer Campbell and Darren Bent earned Sunderland a 2-1 win over relegation-haunted Burnley at the Stadium of Light.
Campbell broke the deadlock when he guided Alan Hutton's near-post cross past the helpless Brian Jensen and into the net, and John Mensah steered Steed Malbranque's free-kick wide from close range before Campbell's header set up Bent to double the lead.
Jensen had to be sharp to deny both strikers their second goals and Steven Thompson pulled a goal back in the 82nd minute, but the Black Cats held on.
The Clarets' colleagues in the drop zone, Hull, were held 0-0 at Birmingham.
Craig Gardner and Lee Bowyer's first-half efforts for Birmingham were saved at full stretch by Matt Duke, selected ahead of Boaz Myhill in the Hull goal, while Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink went close for the Tigers with a diving header from Andy Dawson's cross.
Cameron Jerome wasted a good chance for the hosts early in the second half and Hull could have won it in stoppage time as lifelong Blues fan Craig Fagan's thumping volley flashed wide.
Matt Taylor scored two late goals as Bolton came from behind to as good as ensure their survival with a 2-1 win at Stoke.
Stoke led 1-0 after Tuncay Sanli lofted the ball over the visiting defence for Dave Kitson, who prodded it past a stranded Jussi Jaaskelainen before slotting home (13), and Rory Delap's long throw was then headed against the post by Robert Huth.
But Taylor equalised five minutes from time with a free-kick which went under a leaping Stoke wall, taking a slight deflection off Ricardo Fuller en route, and then added his and Wanderers' second three minutes later from substitute Vladimir Weiss' cross.
Tim Cahill settled a five-goal thriller at Blackburn in Everton's favour in the 90th minute.
Mikel Arteta's fourth-minute penalty gave Everton the upper hand at Blackburn, the Spaniard slotting home after being brought down by Ryan Nelsen's reckless challenge - though he was later lucky to escape a red card after appearing to poke Morten Gamst Pedersen in the eye.
Leighton Baines' thunderous 25-yard strike cannoned off the outside of Paul Robinson's right-hand post with the home goalkeeper motionless, but Rovers' Steven Nzonzi went one better in the 68th minute when he blasted a swerving 30-yard shot past Tim Howard.
Everton substitute Victor Anichebe made an impact with his first touch, flicking on for Ayegbeni Yakubu to make it 2-1 with 11 minutes left.
Another replacement, Jason Roberts, levelled from range two minutes later - only for Cahill to then tap in Yakubu's low cross.
Wolves edged one more point closer to safety with a determined performance to earn a 0-0 draw with Fulham at Craven Cottage.
Bobby Zamora rattled the woodwork in the second half but Roy Hodgson's side know they will have to put in a much-improved performance if they are to beat Hamburg in the Europa League semi-final on Thursday - providing the game goes ahead, amid concerns over the volcanic ash cloud enveloping Europe.
