The Fulham manager enjoyed two spells at Old Trafford either side of a two-year period at the Catalan giants, although a season of that was spent on-loan at Bayern Munich.

Barcelona head into the game next weekend as favourites at the end of a campaign that has them labelled in some quarters as the best team of all time.

Hughes agrees that Barca have been insatiable under Pep Guardiola but believes United have the ability to secure victory at Wembley.

"Barcelona are the outstanding team in world football at this moment in time," he said.

"I've had the fortune to go out and see them live on a number of occasions this season and the quality of football they produce is second to none.

"But, saying that, the one team that could cause an upset is Manchester United just by virtue of the fact that they are winners.

"They have the knowledge and experience of going into these types of games and understand what it takes.

"It is a one off game, it is a final. It is not over two legs.

"You might say that maybe Barcelona would come through but it would still be very close.

"In a one off game you have to hope all your players perform at their top level and their maximum.

"If they they do that and with a little bit of luck that can turn games then you have a chance.

"And certainly Manchester United will feel they have every chance of winning the European Cup irrespective of the quality they are up against."

He added: "I think what everybody hopes is that the game itself will be outstanding and a spectacle for the game in Europe because the two best teams are going up against each other.

"Sometimes such games don't match the quality of the clubs and the players involved.

"I would hope that is not the case this time and given the talent on show I think everybody is excited about the prospect of what they can produce on the day."
