EURO WRAP: Manchester United will avoid European big guns Barcelona and Real Madrid in the last 16 of the Champions League after they came from behind to draw 1-1 with Valencia.
There was a scare for United as they conceded a first half strike to Pablo Hernandez, ruining their chances of becoming the first team ever to get through the group stage without letting in a goal.
But midfielder Anderson came to the rescue with a rare goal after 62 minutes, pouncing to sweep home the rebound after a Wayne Rooney effort had been superbly saved by Valencia keeper Vicente Guaita.
Dimitar Berbatov, who scored five times against Blackburn in his last home game for United, missed a host of chances to wrap up victory but a draw was enough to keep the club’s Champions League campaign on track.
Elsewhere in Group C, Turkish side Bursaspor picked up their first ever point with a 1-1 draw at home against Rangers.
Tottenham also topped their group despite surrendering a lead on three occasions in a thrilling 3-3 draw at FC Twente.
Knowing a win would secure top spot in Group A, Tottenham took the lead early on following a shocking howler from goalkeeper Sander Boschker, who completely missed the ball when trying to clear a backpass from Peter Wisgerhof, who was unluckily credited with an own goal.
Denny Landzaat converted a penalty kick to have the hosts back on level terms, but Jermain Defoe put the Spurs in front again in the opening minutes of the second half.
The lead lasted less than 10 minutes before Roberto Rosales equalised for the hosts, but Defoe was on hand minutes later to put his side up for a third time.
However, their joy was short lived as Nacer Chadli rounded off the scoring in the 64th minute to ensure Twente qualified for the Europa League.
In the other Group A match, Inter missed the chance to top the group as they were humbled 3-0 by Werder Bremen.
FC Copenhagen sealed second spot in Group D with a 3-1 rout of Panathinaikos, while Rubin Kazan went down 2-0 at Barcelona on Tuesday.
Copenhagen needed a win to wrap up their spot in the Champions League's knockout stages and did just that against the Greek champions, who finished their campaign winless.
Having already sewed up first place in Group D, Barca coach Pep Guardiola's inexperienced Barca line-up still managed to topple the Russian champions 2-0 at the Camp Nou.
Barcelona finish top of Group D with 14 points, with Copenhagen four points behind in second.
Rubin move to the Europa League with six points, while Panathinaikos exit the tournament with just two points from their six fixtures.
