MANCHESTER United claimed top spot in the Barclays Premier League for the first time this year as they beat West Brom 2-0 while Manchester City lost 1-0 at Swansea.
Wayne Rooney scored a goal in each half to ease the defending champions past the 10-man Baggies at Old Trafford, taking his tally for the season to 26 and extending United's winning sequence in the league to four matches.
West Brom lost Jonas Olsson to a red card in the 66th minute when 1-0 down and United doubled their lead five minutes later through a Rooney penalty.
City ceded top spot as Luke Moore's header proved decisive for Swansea at the Liberty Stadium, where Scott Sinclair had earlier had a penalty saved by Blues goalkeeper Joe Hart.
Mario Balotelli and Sergio Aguero spurned chances and Micah Richards had a header ruled out for City, who were knocked off the top for the first time since October.
Wigan battled to a 1-1 draw at Norwich, but it was not enough to lift them off the bottom of the table.
Wes Hoolahan clipped in Simeon Jackson's cross to put the Canaries in front after 10 minutes.
However, Wigan grew into the match and eventually netted a deserved equaliser through a well-taken finish by Victor Moses on 68 minutes.
