Goalkeeper Ryota Tsuzuki saved Mejdi Traoui's attempt in the fourth round of spot-kicks after team-mate Mohamed Ali Nafkha had hit the post with Etoile's first penalty.

Washington, Yuki Abe, Yuichiro Nagai and Hajime Hosogai were all successful for Reds.

The win, which was secured after the game had finished 2-2 over 90 minutes, left Reds coach Holger Osieck delighted with the result.

"I'm very happy that we could finish this tournament on a positive not, to finish the third ranked team in this precious tournament," the German said.

"We had one day's less preparation and the players showed a lot of commitment and heart. We gave away two goals that we shouldn't have and that made it difficult, but we went into penalties and showed the determination it took to win."

Etoile took the lead with just five minutes on the clock after Keisuke Tsuboi upended Amine Chermiti inside the penalty area and Sabeur Frej scored from the spot.

Reds pulled level in the 35th minute when an inch-perfect cross from Takahito Soma was headed home by Washington, while just six minutes later the Brazilian almost put Urawa in front only for his right-footed shot to hit the crossbar,

With just two minutes left in the half Etoile also hit the woodwork when Ferj's header smacked the post before Tsuzuki gathered the ball at the second attempt.

A tepid second half came to life in the 70th minute when Reds thought they had done enough to win the game with Washington claiming his second of the game.

The former Tokyo Verdy 1969 striker, playing in his last match for Reds before returning to Brazil, struck with a close-range header after Nagai's free-kick was floated into the six-yard box.

But some comedy defending by the Reds backline saw Chermiti evade Nene and a bumbling Tsuzuki before somehow managing to poke the ball over the line.

As a result, the game went straight to a penalty shootout and Tsuzuki became the hero as he atoned for his earlier error.

"All in all I'm looking back at a very successful season," said Osieck, whose side won the Asian Champions League in November.

"Today was our 57th game since March 1 and that's quite a lot of football."
