THE Vietnamese Football Federation may suspend play in the V-League after violence erupted at a match last weekend resulting in the death of a fan.
Trouble broke out on Sunday after a 1-1 draw between Song Lam Nghe An and Hai Phong at the Vinh Stadium in northern Vietnam.
A large contingent of Hai Phong fans made the long journey to Vinh and the trouble began when a late equaliser for the visitors led to home supporters throwing objects at the celebrating Hai Phong fans.
The violence spiralled out of control and ended up with eight people hospitalised and one Song Lam fan killed after being run over by a car driven by a Hai Phong fan.
"We mobilised double the normal number of policemen and security guards than usual for the match but the Hai Phong fans came in much larger number than expected," said stadium official Lo Trung Thanh.
It is not the first incidence of violence at a Vietnamese football match this season and the VFF have threatened to take action in the wake of the tragedy.
"We are considering temporarily closing the league now that violence has reached a climax," said VFF spokesman Nguyen Lan Trung to the Vietnamese media.
