Valencia celebrated their 100-year anniversary earlier this week after they were officially formed on March 18th, 1919 and have since become one of the most successful teams in La Liga.

They have competed in 84 of the 88 LaLiga seasons to date and have won 22 trophies including six of LaLiga titles and a UEFA Cup in 2004.

They started their journey playing in the Valencian Community’s regional championship and entered the Copa del Rey in 1923 being placed in the Segunda Division – today known as LaLiga 1|2|3 – when LaLiga began in 1929.

Just three years after being placed in Spain’s domestic competitions they gained promotion to the top flight and won the LaLiga not long after in 1942, winning two more in the following five years.

They last won a league title in 2004 with the side managed by Rafa Benitez and led by current LaLiga ambassador David Albeida.

Their stadium ‘Camp de Mestalla’ is within walking distance from the city centre and has hosted the club’s games since May 1923, making it the oldest football stadium in La Liga.

Mestalla has been regularly renovated over the decades and has hosted games at both the 1982 World Cup and 1992 Olympic games, currently seating 55,000 strong.

Valencia’s closest neighbours and local rivals are Levante, who in recent years have provided a tough test in the derby matches.

There is also a local rivalry with Villarreal, from the neighbouring province of Castellon. This season Valencia drew away at both Levante and Villarreal, before winning the return game 3-0 against the Yellow Submarine, with another city derby against Los Granotas at Mestalla coming up on April 14.

As the club has progressed through the years they have been focused on international expansion and increasing their global fan base. This move has been overseen by Singaporean Peter Lim.

The remaining months of the 2018/19 campaign will see Valencia aim for a top-four La Liga finish, as well as facing Barcelona in the Copa del Ray final.

After 100 historic years, Los Che look set to continue their success well into their second century of existence.
