Valeri had been out of favour at Grosseto for almost two months after a recent contract dispute, but the issue seems resolved now and the Aussie has been back recently doing what he does best.

Grosseto had gone ahead on 10 minutes from the penalty spot, before Valeri swooped on a defensive mistake to round the Frosinone keeper and slide in a shot to double his side's lead.

Frosinone did drag one back in the second-half but Grosseto did enough to claim the points and move into the top six playoff spots.

By all reports, Valeri's performance was excellent, applying plenty of pressure on his opponents in midfield.

Elsewhere in Europe overnight, Harry Kewell put in a sparkling performance up front for Galatasaray, scoring the winner in their 1-0 triumph over Bruce Djite's Genclerbirligi in Turkey's Super Lig.

Kewell was finding plenty of freedom against Gencler in the first-half but missed a number of chances, before finally finding the net late in the opening stanza, only to be dubiously ruled offside.

The disallowed goal had been a moment of brilliance from Kewell after a neat finish from Abdulkader Keita's low cross.

Cimbom had dominated before Genclerbirligi mounted the pressure early in the second-half, building the tension around the Ali Sami Yen Stadium on the back of some indifferent recent results for Galatasaray.

But on 77 minutes, Kewell broke the deadlock after a nice move involving Elano and Keita, allowed the Aussie a simple close-range finish. Kewell and Elano then produced what appeared an amusing well-rehearsed celebration.

Djite was brought on five minutes after Kewell's goal as Gencler searched for a reply, but it was too late.

The result sees Galatasaray go top of the Super Lig, although Fenerbahce can move to the summit with victory over Trabzonspor on Sunday.

Previous leaders Kayserispor lost 2-1 at home to Antalyaspor, with Aussies James Troisi and Mile Jedinak both appearing for their respective sides.

Troisi was a 52nd minute substitute for Kayserispor and he saw a long-range effort go over the bar, while Jedinak played the full game for the winners.

Elsewhere in Turkey's top flight, Michael Petkovic missed Sivasspor's 3-2 win at Ankaragucu.

In Holland's Eredivisie, Brett Holman was absent due to a calf injury while James Holland continues to be overlooked as AZ Alkmaar started life under Dick Advocaat with a 3-0 win over ADO Den Haag.

In Scotland's Premier League, Danny Invincibile scored an early goal for Kilmarnock as they slipped up 2-1 to bottom club Falkirk.

Falkirk had taken a third minute lead, before Invincibile volleyed in off the post from Danny Hay's eighth minute cross.

Ryan Flynn scored the winner for Falkirk on 58 minutes, before Invincibile was replaced five minutes later.

Elsewhere, James Wesolowski and Trent McClenahan couldn't get on the pitch as Hamilton's game with Dundee United was postponed due to heavy snow.

In Scotland's Division One, Erik Paartalu put in a full shift for Morton as they lost 3-1 at Dundee, while Simon Storey played a full game with Frankie Lagana starting and going off after a 75 minutes as Airdrie lost 5-3 at Ross County.
