AUSSIES ABROAD: Socceroo Carl Valeri made his first start of the season as Sassuolo were knocked out of the Coppa Italia 2-0 by Serie A club Chievo Verona overnight.
Valeri, who has been left on the bench in Sassuolo's past three Serie B matches, played the full game in midfield as goals from Davide Mandelli and Davide Moscardelli sent the Flying Donkeys through.
The Socceroo's appearance was only his second of the season since a 30-minute run off the bench on October 2.
The rare appearance came against a Chievo side coached by Stefano Pioli, the man who took Valeri to Sassuolo last January.
Elsewhere overnight, 23-year-old Australian defender Ersan Gulum helped Besiktas qualify for the group stage of the Turkish Kupasi, playing a full game in their 3-0 win over Mersin Idman Yurdu.
Gulum was deployed in the heart of defence for Besiktas for the entire match which went for 120 minutes after a goalless first 90, before the Black Eagles opened the floodgates.
Elsewhere, James Troisi's Kayserispor were knocked out of the cup 3-2 by Karsiyaka. Troisi remains on the sidelines due to a long-term injury.
In the Greek Cup, Nathan Burns did not play as AEK Athens qualified for the final 16 after thumping Panthrakikos 5-1.
In the Cupa Romaniei, Spase Dilevski was a 78th minute substitute as Universitatea moved into the final 16 after a 2-0 win over Pandurii Targa Jiu.
In Saudi Arabia's Pro League, Jon McKain's Al Nasr moved into second spot after beating Al Ittifaq 2-1.
