SOCCEROO midfielder Carl Valeri is set to leave Serie B club US Grosseto for promotion-chasing Sassuolo according to reports from Italy.
The 25-year-old Australian international has had an unhappy time in Tuscany in recent months and now it appears he's set to link up with former Grosseto mentor Stefano Pioli at Sassuolo.
Valeri's agent Luca Urbani revealed, "There is a very real possibility that the deal will go through.
"The player is wanted by his former coach and also by the sports director that put him on top of their list."
It is understood Sassuolo, who are currently fourth in Serie B, are eager to complete the deal quickly to ensure Valeri is available for their next fixture against Empoli on Wednesday.
Grosseto sporting director Andrea Iaconi told TuttoMercatoWeb: "We have not closed the deal, but the player is close enough to the transfer in ownership.
"I am optimistic. But it is also true that sometimes the negotiations break down when you least expect it."
According to Tuscany newspaper Il Tirreno, Sassuolo have offered 500,000 euros to Grosseto as part of a co-ownership deal for Valeri.
The Canberra-born midfielder had recently missed almost two months of football after a row with Grosseto, where the club wouldn't play him unless he renewed his contract which was set to expire in the next European summer.
The situation put his hopes of going to the 2010 World Cup with the Socceroos at stake.
But in December, Valeri agreed to renew his deal at Grosseto for a further two years and he was soon back on the pitch, even scoring in the recent win over Frosinone.
Nevertheless, Sassuolo are now expected to finalise terms on a deal for Valeri by the end of the weekend.
