The match between the Sassuolo, currently second in Italy's second division, and Cesena who are sitting in fourth, was called off by the referee after 74 minutes.

Australian international Valeri had started the match for Sassuolo and picked up an early booking.

Sassuolo had the best chances to break the deadlock, with Daniele Martinetti going closest after hitting the upright with a header.

The match had to be called off as the situation became increasingly precarious for the players as heavy snow fell on the ground.

"That's not a real game," complained Cesena coach Pierpaolo Bisoli.

The remaining 16 minutes will now be played at a later, yet to be confirmed, date.

Elsewhere overnight, young Aussie goalkeeper Chris O'Connor was an unused sub for new club Bohemians as they defeated Sporting Fingal 1-0 on the opening day of the new Irish Premier Division season. Bohemians are the reigning champions in Ireland.

In France's Ligue 2, Australian defender Ante Rozic is still battling a sprained ankle and missed Sedan's 0-0 draw with Caen overnight. Sedan are now ninth, nine points out of the promotion spots.
