Current PEC Zwolle coach John van't Schip, who Valkanis assisted at City, has re-appointed the Australian as his number-two at the Eredivisie club.

Valkanis succeeded van't Schip at City but was sacked after six wins, one draw and eight losses from his time in charge.

Valkanis described the appointment on Twitter as a dream role.

"It started as a dream. It is my passion. It is now a reality," Valkanis said.

"I am humbled & honoured to join PEC Zwolle as assistant to John van't Schip in one of the top leagues in Europe.

"I am excited by the challenges ahead"

He continued the sentiment on the club's website.

“The Eredivisie is one of the most beautiful competitions in Europe," Valkanis said. "I see plenty of challenges ahead of me and am looking forward to this season's new club.

Pec Zwolle finished last season in ninth position.
