Michael Valkanis will lead the Adelaide United players into battle this year after being named as the club’s new captain.
The 32-year-old defender replaces Ang Costanzo who led the side during the recent Asian Champions League campaign and former captain Ross Aloisi having left the club at the end of the last A-League season.
The new man in possession of the armband said: “I've been at the club since day one, when Adelaide United was first formed in the days of the NSL, and I've watched it grow into a successful club.
"I know exactly what's required of me and the responsibilities as captain and I'm looking forward to really taking the boys to the next step.
"I know every individual is motivated in a different way and I've got to try and find out what motivates each individual and help us achieve one common goal.
"It's going to be a difficult job; it's going to be a challenge because there is a lot of old faces but a lot of new faces and we'll have to try get all the guys to gel together.
"You need to lead by example, there's no doubt about that, you have to always encourage and there is always going to be some rebuke, there's always going to be problems you are going to sort out."
The club has appointed Travis Dodd as vice-captain. He said: “I never been given an official leadership role so to speak so to be handed the vice-captaincy gives me a lot of confidence, to know the coaching staff have shown faith and believe I can do the job.”
