Van Basten will step down from his post after Euro 2008 and has been linked with the top job at the Amsterdam ArenA.

He told AD Sportwereld newspaper: "I spoke last week with Ajax. They wanted to know if I was interested in working there.

"It is still quite early but it was a really productive talk. I understand they also have another candidate.

"Sometime next week we will have a second conversation.

"I will focus my attention first on the work I am doing for the KNVB (Dutch Football Association). The national team and Euro 2008 are the most important things to me."

Ajax will not reveal the name of the second candidate, but two more former Holland coaches, Russia boss Guus Hiddink and Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard, have been linked with the job.

Adrie Koster has been in caretaker charge since Henk ten Cate quit the post in October to become part of Avram Grant's backroom staff at Chelsea.
