The 41 year-old former midfielder took up his post with the Socceroos upon his father-in-law Bert van Marwijk's interim appointment back in January.

It will be his first managerial job.

FourFourTwo understands that van Marwijk is likely to join him at PSV in some form of advisory capacity, although there will be no official announcement on that under after the Socceroos are fully done and dusted in Russia.

Van Bommel made his name as a player at PSV between 1999 and 2005, winning four Eredivisie titles and one domestic cup.

After successful stints at Barcelona, Bayern Munich and AC Milan, he spent one swansong season back at the Philips Stadion in 2012-13 before hanging up his boots.

He will take over from former Netherlands teammate Philip Cocu, who is on his way to Turkish giants Fenerbahce having led PSV to the championship last season.

Van Bommel will inherent a talented squad that includes, for the moment at least, Mexico's rapidly-rising World Cup star, Hirving Lozano.
