Socceroos assistant coach Mark Van Bommel has played down the significance of the results of World Cup warm-up matches ahead of Australia's final friendly against Hungary tonight.
"The press represented the Netherlands at the 2006 and 2010 World Cup, and said, "I’ve seen some teams who had very good preparations, then lost a few games at the tournament, and the other way around," said Van Bommel.
Since qualifying for Russia, Australia have played three friendlies, losing 4-1 to Norway and drawing 0-0 with Colombia before beating Czechia 4-0 on 1 June.
“Of course we want to win against Hungary and have confidence to go to Russia, but that doesn’t give you a guarantee," he added.
"I think we had a very good preparation in Turkey. We worked hard on the physical part and also tactical art, and all of that gives us a lot of confidence."
Van Bommel was fielding the questions in the Socceroos' pre-match press conference, with head coach Bert Van Marwijk having taken short leave to visit a gravely ill friend in the Netherlands.
Earlier in the week, Van Marwijk had conveyed a similar message to the press. The squad have only gone into minor analysis about tonight's opponents, focusing instead on how they'll set up for their opening game a week today.
"It’s all about France," dais Van Marwijk. "I want everybody to concentrate on that game, everybody. He, him, the players, everybody, the chairman, the directors, everybody."
