NEWCASTLE Jets coach Gary Van Egmond has snubbed a move by Sydney FC to lure him south to AllIanz Stadium to take charge immediately.
Sydney have been on the hunt for a new boss since Ian Crook quit two weeks ago after a string of losses and mounting pressure after the recruitment of Italian World Cup superstar Alessandro Del Piero.
The club has been linked with a string of candidates including Avram Grant and Frank Farina.
But today the Jets confirmed Sydney had tried to tempt Gary Van Egmond to the club...but he had now turned them down.
Van Egmond had also been a target for Sydney FC when Central Coast Mariners boss Graham Arnold also turned them down earlier this year, and had again refused then.
"Newcastle Jets can confirm coach Gary van Egmond was offered the Head Coaching role at Sydney FC, effective immediately," said a statement from the club this afternoon.
"The Jets wish to advise van Egmond has declined the offer and remains committed to the club."
Newcastle Jets CEO Robbie Middleby hailed his coach's loyalty and said Sydney's approach was a tribute to his ability.
But he admitted he was angered by Sydney's cheek at making the approach in the middle of the season.
“Gary is a great coach and it is a massive compliment that Sydney FC would be chasing his services,” said Middleby.
“In saying that, we feel it is disrespectful to approach a contracted coach to leave any Club at this point in a season.
“Gary has made it clear he is remaining loyal and staying to continue what he has started, including the development of our exciting young players and in particular, growing the Emerging Jets Program.”
