BAYERN Munich were celebrating their first trophy of the season yesterday after a 3-1 win over Bochum gave them a practically unassailable lead at the top of the Bundesliga with one game of the season to go.
Second-placed Schalke would need to overturn a 17-goal and three-point deficit on the final day of the season to steal the title from Bayern, meaning the Bavarians were able to celebrate at the Allianz Arena yesterday.
"We have reached our most important aim which was the Bundesliga title," said coach Louis van Gaal.
"The first 20, 25 minutes today were excellent - that was the best football we have played in the Allianz Arena this season.
"All we had to do then was wait for news from Schalke."
With Schalke going down 2-0 at home to Werder Bremen, Bayern were able to secure the title with one game to go and give Van Gaal one of the greatest satisfactions of his long career.
"This title is worth a great deal," he said. "There are not many coaches in Europe who are fortunate enough to win the title in three different countries.
"I am very proud of that. FC Bayern is the best club I have worked for so far."
Bayern will now look to end the season with a historic treble.
They face Werder Bremen in the final of the DFB-Pokal in a fortnight before travelling to Madrid for the final of the Champions League against Inter Milan on May 22.
And Van Gaal is not going to rest on his laurels having had his first taste of glory with the Bavarians.
"Now we want to win even more," he said on the club's website.
