The A-League's Video Assistant Referee (VAR) has once again caused social media outrage after two divisive decisions in Friday night's Melbourne City-Perth Glory match at AAMI Park.
Glory were awarded a penalty by the VAR late in the first half when City's Osama Malik tackled youngster Jacob Italiano late inside the box.
Initially, referee Daniel Elder awarded a goal kick, but after a lengthy delay, the VAR intervened decisively, with a penalty awarded and Malik handed a red card.
To further City's pain, they had a VAR referral when Bart Schenkeveld appeared to be pulled down from a cross by Shane Lowry but it was declined causing a stir.
The way VAR is used in the #ALeague is awful. I'd rather it not in football at all than wait 5mins while we watch the ref huddle over a monitor, before making a decision without explanation. Rugby it! #MCYvPER

VAR total farce again, how long is the delay, refs will never make a call now...

#MCYvPER seriously disappointing when the so called experts like Kosmina, @NedZelic @RobbieSlater17 think it’s ok to fly in the box studs up deny a scoring opportunity! It’s clumsy even if it isn’t intentional!

#VAR has been a huge farce in the first half to be honest. #MCYvPER

Going back to the VAR decision, I thought the ruling was check obvious errors. Okay go and check the penalty which I think it is a pen, however, if it isn't an obvious red card then surely it can't be given especially with the triple punishment rule #MCYvPER

The boot on McCormack… But the VAR is being used terribly. Give each bench three referrals, lose a referral for a failed call. It’s killing the game as is. #MCYvPER

Ridiculous penalty call. If there was a crowd here... they would be going off! #MCYvPER #seagulls #VAR pic.twitter.com/YaiP9qsdBq

Might as well save cash & get rid of refs all together and have VAR rule the game. #MCYvPER
