Veh only took over at the defending Bundesliga champions in the summer but he has paid the price for a disappointing season.

Wolfsburg slumped to their seventh defeat of the campaign yesterday, against Cologne, to leave them in 10th place in the table.

"This decision is not easy for us on the board," said supervisory board chairman Francisco Javier Garcia Sanz.

"However, we came to the realisation that, after the many negative experiences of the past few weeks, we had to act in order to set in motion a new start."

Under Veh, Wolfsburg have not won since November, and back-to-back defeats spelled the end of the 48-year-old's tenure.

General manager Dieter Hoeness added: "We were no longer of the opinion that we could have changed the situation in the foreseeable future with Armin Veh."

Reserve-team coach Lorenz-Guenther Koestner will be in charge for Friday's Bundesliga match at Hamburg.
