Emanuel Alvarez's death was announced by Velez vice president Julio Baldomaro Bianchi.

According to the Telam news agency, Alvarez was shot while meeting with other Velez fans next to the training pitch used by Huracan - San Lorenzo's arch-rivals - in the Boedo neighbourhood of Buenos Aires.

The match itself was abandoned just before kick-off when Velez fans tore down a wire fence before invading the pitch and fighting with police.

"We don't know if there are others wounded, but I can confirm that Emanuel Alvarez died because of the gunshot," Velez treasurer Osvaldo Sopranzi to TN television network.

"I know that he was a popular Velez fan. Now, we are next to the family and that is the most important thing."

"We can't play. The fans said that somebody was shot and if we play things are going to get worse for everybody," said Velez midfielder Hernan Pellerano, just after the match was abandoned.

"Our families are there and I don't think it will be right to continue."
