The Seleccao were semi-finalists in 2006 and Veloso insists he and his teammates have the quality to go all the way this time.

"We want to make history, that is our purpose here," said the Sporting Lisbon player.

"Our first aim is to play well and win our first game against the Ivory Coast.

"We will try to progress to the next round and continue to dream."

Portugal have been drawn in Group G with Brazil and North Korea, as well as the Ivory Coast.

They make their debut against the African side on Tuesday in Port Elizabeth.

"I think every player knows the responsibilities that he has towards the national team and the Portuguese people," said the 24-year-old Veloso.

"We will try to do our best because we have an aim and we want to accomplish it."
