The veteran centre back has come into the injury-ravaged Hunter outfit for at least six weeks and could make his first appearance in the F3 derby on Sunday.

According to the Newcastle Herald, the 34-year-oldwas recruited with the help of Daniel Mullen’s father, who Fyfe played under at South Australian Premier League club Campbelltown City for the past three seasons.

Fyfe, who last signed a pro deal in 2013 for Mes Kerman in the Iran Pro League, has already linked up with the Jets at training.

Mullen senior suggested Fyfe after skipper Nigel Boogaard became the fifth central defender to make the club’s injury list.

Among the injured young defender Daniel Alessi has been ruled out for the season, Daniel Mullen (knee) is listed as up to two months away and Lachlan Jackson (ankle) is yet to return. Key defensive midfielder Ben Kantarovski (knee) is also on the injured list.

Jets coach Mark Jones told the Newcastle Herald: “I spoke to everyone at Campbelltown, and obviously spoke to Dan’s dad, and he was very glowing in the praise of Fyfey, and he’s a good footballer, a good lad and a good communicator."

Fyfe’s last game was the SAPL grand final on September 10 but Jones was impressed with what he saw at training.

“I thought he did well," he said. "He gives us experience. He’s been playing with Campbelltown in the South Australian NPL and did well. They won the grand final there, and he’s a decent player, good background, he’s played at the highest level, and hopefully he’ll be good for us.”

“I wouldn’t rule it out, but he’d probably be better for a sort of seven- to 10-day preparation, but we’ll see how he goes,” Jones said.

Jones expects the experienced Fyfe, who won the A-League Championship with Sydney FC in 2006, could be a real presence for the team.

“His expectations are high, and hopefully that can press us to another level,” Jones said.

“He’s a voice, he’s a leader. He demands the best of other players, and we need to do that.”
