GREEN Gully has moved a step closer to a berth in the Alanic Victorian Premier League Grand Final after an impressive defeat of Hume City, while Heidelberg United ended Northcote City's fairytale run.
Qualifying Final:
Hume City 1 (Richard Cardozo 72')
Green Gully 3 (Brent Fisher 48'75', Steven Burton (pen) 86')
A brace from Kiwi striker Brent Fisher was enough to give Green Gully a 3-1 win over Hume City at Epping, sending the Cavaliers within one win of a spot in the decider.
In a tightly contested first half, the best chances fell for City striker Zoran Petrevski and Cavaliers front man Mathew Sanders.
But Fisher turned the game in Gully's favour moments into the second half.
He squeezed in the opener after Andy Vargas had presented him with a fine cutback from the right.
Hume fought its way back into the contest on 72 minutes with in-form veteran Richard Cardozo scoring his 13th goal of the season and his eighth in as many games.
He struck a well-placed shot into the top corner to beat Gully custodian Nikola Roganovic.
Fisher had his second of the game and third for the club soon after, allowed too much time to shoot and turn from just outside the area.
A penalty from left back Steven Burton just before the whistle after a handball from Isiyan Erdogan gave him his eighth goal of the season and secured Green Gully's place in the Major Semi-Final.
Elimination Final:
Heidelberg United 3 (Osagie Ederaro 42'63', Yannis Galanos 56')
Northcote City 1 (Trent Rixon 90')
Heidelberg United broke the hoodoo held over it by Northcote City to end the fairytale run with a 3-1 win at Olympic Village.
Impressive performances from Osagie Ederaro and Yannis Galanos, both who got on the scoresheet, ensured the Bergers got past a City side that had beaten it 5-1 twice in the regular season.
United striker George Slefendorfas got up highest to a first half corner, but he struck his header into the crossbar.
The star duo combined before the interval to give Heidelberg a lead going into the break.
Galanos spotted Ederaro at the back post, giving the speedster an easy nod in from close range.
Galanos was on the scoresheet himself on 56 minutes, speeding behind the defence and slotting home to double the lead.
The midfielder set up the third with a long throw, as Ederaro again finished from close range amongst a scramble in the area.
Northcote striker Trent Rixon scored a consolation goal, his 20th of the season, but it was not enough to save his side.
City made the finals after being promoted from State League One but the Bergers capitalized on a tired outfit to secure a spot in the semi-finals.
