A SUPERB start to the season for Sunshine George Cross was the highlight of the opening round of games in the Victorian Premier League.
In the final game of the round, the Georgies held on for an impressive 3-2 win over Heidelberg United.
Captain Fidell Richards opened the scoring midway through the first half before United were reduced to 10 men when Joe Kozic was sent off for an errant elbow.
Winger Kyle Joryeff doubled his side's lead before the lively Osagie Ederaro pulled one back.
Substitute and former West Bromwich Albion striker Stuart Nicholson provided the two-goal buffer again and the Georgies held on despite a late own goal.
Hume City regained the three points it had deducted in the off-season with an entertaining 2-1 win at Green Gully on Saturday.
The home team's inability to capitalise on a number of chances in the opening 20 minutes proved costly.
Against the run of play, Hume City was awarded a penalty that was well saved by Gully goalkeeper Kyrakos Gerohchristodoulou from Zoran Petrevski.
Hume opened the scoring through Tansel Baser just after the break but Gully replied quickly through Graham Hockless.
Last year's Gold Medal winner and Hume midfielder Ross Thompson was sent off after 70 minutes, 10 minutes are being brought on as a substitute.
But 10-man Hume still managed to find a winner through Richard Cardozo, who managed to find space at the back post to head home.
Last year's minor premiers Dandenong Thunder recorded a 2-1 win at home to the Melbourne Knights.
A header from Shane Rexhepi and a Joseph Di Iorio goal opened a 2-0 half time lead.
The Knights came out with more purpose in the second half but had striker Kevin Townson sent off for a second bookable offence soon after.
They pulled one back through Jean Dubois and could have pinched a point late on.
At Paisley Park, defending champions Altona Magic played out a 1-1 draw with South Melbourne.
A poor clearance from South goalkeeper Peter Zois resulted in the opening goal of the game, with Tony Saric striking home from the edge of the area on the half hour.
But South managed to clinch a point thanks to substitute Fernando De Moraes, who rounded Magic goalkeeper Tomislav Tomich before sliding the ball into an empty net with less than five minutes to play.
Meanwhile, Richmond secured a 2-1 home win against Northcote City.
Goals from Daniel Visevic and Dimitri Tsiaras on either side of half time gave Richmond the lead before Northcote captain Trent Rixon pulled one back from the spot with 15 minutes to play.
In the opening game of the season, Oakleigh and Bentleigh played out a lacklustre 1-1 draw.
In a fast-paced opening half, talented Cannons midfielder Cameron Watson opened the scoring but Greens striker Johnny Sapazovski cancelled out his goal before the break.
