Marco Rojas and Besart Berisha hit the scoresheet as Melbourne Victory claimed a 2-1 win over Adelaide United at AAMI Park on Saturday.
The result sees Victory close the gap on league leaders Sydney FC back to eight points, after the Sky Blues defeated City in Melbourne on Friday night.
It took until the 66th minute for the first goal to come courtesy of a Rojas free-kick before Berisha scored his 50th goal for Victory to give them a two-goal cushion.
A consolation goal by Tarek Elrich gave the Reds some hope at the end but Victory took home the points.
Victory winger Fahid Ben Khalfallah was an absentee and on the other end it was teenager Daniel Margush’s second A-League game in goals for the Reds.
Margush a spilled the ball in the opening minutes but the league strugglers almost found the lead as early as the third minute as Sergio Cirio had a shot which was cleared off the line by Leigh Broxham.
However Victory managed to create more chances asking questions of United’s defence after a number of shots sailed wide of Margush’s goal.
Rojas nearly found the net after 20 minutes when Berisha combined with James Troisi to set the kiwi up, but Margush tipped the final shot wide.
The Reds began the second half almost scoring, similar in the first as Elrich had a shot which went just wide of Lawrence Thomas’ goal.
Margush continued to stop pluck balls but as Dylan McGowan fouled Rojas outside the box, the 19-year-old could do nothing about the All White’s free kick which curled beautifully into the net.
Victory could have doubled their lead to seal it in the 72nd minute after Rojas’ header from a Carl Valeri cross struck the crossbar and was cleaned up by United.
It did not matter as Berisha doubled the lead 11 minutes later to give Victory some room for error.
And they did make an error, courtesy of Geria which was capitalised by Elrich, however the Reds would cop their 13th loss of the season.
Victory now have the Big Blue next week and will be looking to thwart the league leaders while United travel to play Jiangsu Suning next Wednesday in the AFC Asian Champions League.
