With a large media contingent and the 100 or so Victory fans, it made for a memorable arrival this morning.
One Victory fan drove all night from country Victoria to arrive at the airport by 5.30am this morning.
Another fan, Chris Spiteri, said Kewell’s arrival will help the club attract a wider fan-base.
“The guy who is sitting on the fence is now going to come to Victory games just to see Harry Kewell,” he told au.fourfourtwo.com.
Later in the day Melbourne Victory chairman Anthony di Pietro confirmed that the club was seeing a boost in membership numbers but didn’t specify the club’s goal for average home attendances.
He added that the club had already seen more corporate support with the club close to selling front of shirt sponsorship rights to their away kit.
“In a way we want everyone to embrace football in Australia for what it is and the type of football it is,” said Spiteri.
“We’re a different type of football. It’s no use comparing us to England or France or Italy, because it’s not our first sport.
“However for us to be a third tier sport in Australia and to have the passionate supporters that we do have is a testament to us.
“This is like a thank you to the Victory fans.”
Spiteri said he couldn’t sleep the night before such was his excitement at meeting his hero.
He added: “I don’t think this has ever happened. And I don’t think it ever will [again] happen until another massive name would come home.
“If Tim Cahill came I’d welcome him just the same but Harry Kewell is my hero. Not just for the Victory, even if he signed for Sydney, fair enough.
“Seeing Bernie Mandic here makes me feel like going over and giving him a big kiss!”
