Already dealing with the disappointment of surrendering the Premiership to Sydney following their 2-0 loss,  Victory were ropeable stronger action wasn't taken against Terry McFlynn following his crude tackle on Kruse late in the game.

The Melbourne forward was taken from the field on a stretcher, his season likely to be over once x-rays are taken today.

McFlynn's tackle was late and unnecessary but only drew a yellow card from referee Matthew Breeze when perhaps a sending off was in order.

Melbourne coach Ernie Merrick refused to shake hands with McFlynn after the game, exchanging harsh words with the Northern Irishman.

Asked Kruse's condition, a grim-faced Merrick replied: "The first impression is that he has a broken leg."

Pressed for his view on the tackle and his clash with McFlynn, the Victory boss responded bluntly: "I've got no comment to make. I've got nothing to say about that."

Melbourne is yet to beat Sydney this year and has gone goalless in the past three encounters.

But Merrick is confident his charges can bounce back in Thursday night's major semi-final against the Sky Blues at Etihad Stadium with the return of inspirational skipper Kevin Muscat perfectly timed to revitalise Victory.

"There is a disappointment in the dressing room but there is also a determination to bounce back from this," he said. "Our players don't feel as though we were outplayed tonight. We were outscored but we weren't outplayed.

"I think the boys played some great football without finishing it off."

He added: "It would concern me if we weren't creating the goal scoring opportunities but we are. We're creating really good opportunities.

"I don't feel like we're playing bad football against them but we have to start scoring goals against them."
