Flores's future at the club has been in doubt since they began negotiations to sign Greece veteran Giorgios Karagounis, 36, as their new international marquee.

Ange Postecoglou last month admitted to au.fourfourtwo.com that the move would mean there would be no room for Flores as a marquee signing if they pulled off the Karagounis deal.

Central Coast Mariners are now expected to bring Flores to Gosford next season after earlier admitting they were keen to add his Argentinian flair to Bluetongue - despite concerns about his wages on their budget.

Meanwhile Victory's talks with Karagounis have continued on without resolve and were further complicated when Melbourne Heart also entered the negotiations to sign the current Greece captain.

Flores has been giving enigmatic hints about his future on Twitter in recent days, and earlier today promised to reveal an update on his situation at 8pm tonight.

Former Adelaide United fans favourite Flores joined Victory at the start of the 2012/13 season after a spell in China and made 24 appearances, scoring four goals.

During his stint with the club, Flores also claimed Hyundai A-League 'Goal of the Year' award for his strike against Wellington Phoenix at Etihad Stadium.

A club statement added: "Melbourne Victory can confirm that midfielder Marcos Flores has been released with immediate effect....The club wishes Marcos well in his future endeavours."

Flores responded to the move on Twitter, insisting: "I am happy. Everything happens for a reason.

"Give me time to let you know about my future. At the moment I am free and so excited for what is coming towards me."

He added: "95 of 100 messages describe me as a good person and that makes me so proud. Thanks A-League fans!

"That is how I want to be remembered first, rather than a good or average player."
