Willem II midfielder Joe Keenan is set to join Melbourne Victory on April 1 after growing frustrated by his lack of first team opportunities.
The 170cm, 24-year old left-flanker had a contract with the Tilburg outfit until the summer of 2008, but has made only 21 appearances since making the move from Chelsea.
Willem II signed the player last April, two months after he had arrived on loan at the club. Prior to that the former Chelsea benchwarmer had also been loaned out to both Brentford and Westerlo.
He holds Chelsea's club record for the number of times he was an unused sub before getting his debut game for the first team.
A statement from Willem II said; "Keenan asked the club for a move to the Australian club because he wants to play games on a weekly basis. He has always had an exemplary attitude and worked hard for the team."
Keenan joined Chelsea as a teenager and made his first team debut aged just 19, in February 2002 replacing John Terry in a game against Aston Villa.
He appeared again the same month when he came off the bench for Gianfranco Zola in an FA Cup match against Preston.
He was given a four year deal in 2002 while he still had two years outstanding on his current contract and was seen as a hot prospect by former manager Claudio Rainieri.
But he broke his leg while playing in the reserves soon after signing the new contract, putting him out of action for much of the 2002/3 season, although he did play again as a first team sub against Newcastle later that year.
When Jose Mourinho took over, he fell out of favour at the club, didn't feature in their first team plans, and was loaned out.
“Joseph fits the profile that we’ve been looking for when recruiting players for the club,” Victory coach Ernie Merrick saidn today. “He’s in his early 20s; he’s technically highly skilled, fast and has a great work ethic.
“His pedigree speaks for itself and his attitude towards moving to Australia and competing in the Hyundai A-League is a very positive one. He considers this as a good career choice and we’re very fortunate to have a player of Joseph’s calibre joining what is forming as a very strong squad.”
