The Melbourne Victory midfielder admits he was left devastated by his omission from Graham Arnold's Olympic squad, especially after having played such a major part in helping Australia qualify for Beijing.

However Ward has no complaints at club level and he is relishing the closing weeks of the A-League campaign.

Adelaide United lead the way with a game in hand but Ward's header in the recent triumph over the Reds at Telstra Dome means there is only a single point between the two at this stage.

Ward told au.fourfourtwo.com today: "It (the goal against Adelaide) helped us to three important points, especially as we then dropped points against Perth at the weekend.

"It was very disappointing to lose over there and there are no excuses really. After a good start to the game we lost our way a bit at the end of the first half.

"But it's over now and you have to look to the next game. We've two games left, both at home and you have to try and take advantage of that. It's huge for us and we know the crowd will get right behind us.

"Adelaide are top at the moment but we can't worry about what they may or may not do. We just how have to focus on ourselves, try and get maximum points from our last two games and make sure we're in that top two.

"Then it's into the finals and it's something I'm really looking forward to.

"I'm enjoying it (my football) and I've no regrets about coming back from England to play here."

Ward is delighted with the way his season has panned out with Melbourne and it has helped ease the pain of an international blow back in the winter.

He said: "I was pretty devastated not to make the Olympic team, especially having played so much in helping us get there.

"When you've put three years into something it's hard not getting the chance to see it through. But the coach is the one who picks the team and you get on with it.

"So 2008 wasn't the best year in terms of that (the Olyroos). But 2009 has started well and hopefully it gets better."

While the Olympic dream is over Ward has certainly not given up on the international dream.

Pim Verbeek will rely heavily on A-League players for the Asian Cup qualifiers and Ward would love to hear his name read out next week when the squad for the Indonesia clash is announced.

He said: "It would be great to get a call up. I haven't really had the chance to work with Pim but I've heard good things and would love the chance to work with him."
