England striker Rooney has been at the centre of one of the most high-profile transfer sagas of the close-season and remains the subject of public interest from Chelsea over a potential move to Stamford Bridge.

Question marks had been raised about the reception he would receive from United's supporters when he faced the London club in the Premier League on Monday, but he was cheered throughout the goalless draw.

It remains to be seen whether that will be enough to persuade the 27-year-old that his future lies at Old Trafford, with United still insistent that he is not for sale.

However, the fans' backing came as no surprise to Vidic.

"The supporters have always supported the players," he said. "Wayne is no different.

"He has been supported throughout the years and I don't think there was a question he would have been supported against Chelsea.

"He has scored so many goals and won so many trophies. I expected him to receive a good reception."
