ADELAIDE United fly out to China today with Aurelio Vidmar confident his team can collect the point needed to book a Champions League quarter-final spot.
Adelaide United FC Coach Aurelio Vidmar is confident his squad can collect the point it needs, when it faces Changchun Yatai in China in the final Match Day of the AFC Champions League 2008 Group Stage.
The Reds have 13 points out of a possible 15 in the competition so far and need at least draw or a win over Chinese champions Changchun Yatai on Wednesday to create history and become the first Australian team to reach the last eight.
After his team’s performances in the opening five games, Vidmar believes the playing group has what it takes to get the result but he also knows the challenge that confronts them. Changchun has a number of Chinese national players and is led well by inspirational captain Samuel Caballero.
He said: “We’ve got a pretty good structure at the moment, it has been really good throughout the whole campaign, and if we stick to our roles then I’m very confident that we can get that point and qualify.
“However, we definitely know that we’re up for a massive game. They’re a very good side, they’re a really hard working team and we’re under no illusion that we need one point, but in going over there to take that point it’s actually like going over there and trying to win the game, that’s how difficult the task is going to be.”
The teams fought out a 0-0 draw at Hindmarsh Stadium back in March, and despite United only needing another draw this time around, Vidmar says his team will go in with the same approach it has in its previous games.
“Nothing is going to change. If you go there with a defensive mindset and you go a goal behind, it’s going to be very difficult to change your mindset and get forward,” Vidmar said of the danger in going into the match looking to defend.
Reds’ strike pair Paul Agostino and Bruce Djite have both booked their place in the travelling party after returning from illness and injury, but Vidmar is unsure in what capacity they will be used in the match.
“It’s hard to tell because we’ll just have to see how the game pans out. I think there could be a chance that they will play some role but how much time is hard to tell at this stage,” Vidmar said of the duo.
Other changes from United’s last outing in the competition is defender Milan Susak being given the nod at left back, in what will be his final appearance for the club, while Angelo Costanzo is also available after suspension.
There is an injury cloud over defender Sasa Ognenovski, who has an impingement of his hip flexor, but Vidmar says he should be fine and that they will monitor how he pulls up after the team trains in China on Monday.
Better news from Brazil though where early reports suggest Cassio's knee injury is nowhere near as bad as first feared and he could be back in contention for the start of next season.
Further incentive to get the right result in China is the match being the final appearance for veteran Richie Alagich, the 34 year old stating that he would like nothing more than to end his career having helped United become the first Australian club to qualify for the second round of the AFC Champions League.
