Having touched down in Adelaide, United coach Aurelio Vidmar was extremely pleased to have secured three points against a highly fancied opponent in a tough opening match of the competition. However, Vidmar says it is vital that United make the result count going into their second match of the group stage.

“It was great that we got the win and what is really important now is that we back up on Wednesday. If we don’t get the right result at home then all of the work we did last Wednesday means nothing,” Vidmar said.

“In the Hyundai A-League last season we had a lot of opportunities to cement ourselves into the top four and we didn’t take those opportunities.

"Once again we are presented with an opportunity to go three points clear on top of the group and it is something we spoke about directly after the game so hopefully we are all focused and make sure we get the three points at home.”

Reds defender Robert Cornthwaite, who opened the scoring against Pohang with a header after just three minutes, said the players had got a lot out of the win at the Steelyard against a talented and well drilled Pohang outfit.

“The win means a lot to the boys. To go over to Korea in a tough environment against a tough side and to get a result like that was amazing so we are very happy with the start to the tournament,” Cornthwaite said.

“The experience of playing in the AFC Champions League last year probably helped us. I don’t think Pohang had played an international game before as a club so apparently they were a bit nervous but I didn’t feel any nerves through our camp and I think that helped us.”

Cornthwaite’s goal was just his second for the club, his other coming in September 2006 against Newcastle Jets in the A-League.

“Lucas (Pantelis) put in a great ball and I happened to get on the end of it and it has been about 18 months since I last scored so hopefully I will only have to wait another five days before I can get another one,” the defender said.

United next face Changchun Yatai at Hindmarsh Stadium with just a week long turnaround from the first round of matches. The Chinese champions defeated Vietnam’s Becamex Binh Duong 2-1 at home in its opening encounter and Vidmar knows the team from north eastern China will provide another massive test.

“We started off in our preparations wanting to win our home games and trying to get draws away from home. We’ve taken a massive step forward by winning the first game away and it is really imperative now that we get three points on Wednesday against Changchun,” Vidmar said.

The United squad will have a light training session at the beach tomorrow before all the focus turns to the match against Changchun Yatai on Wednesday night at Hindmarsh stadium. The Chinese champions are scheduled to arrive in Adelaide at 9.05am on Monday morning.

Vidmar is urging all Adelaide United fans to turn out and support The Reds against the Chinese champions at Hindmarsh Stadium on Wednesday night.
