HARD work in the off-season has paid off for Wellington Phoenix striker Mirjan Pavlovic with the 22-year-old named in the Olyroos squad for a friendly against Japan U23s on June 1.
The match will act as a curtain-raiser to the Kirin Cup match between Japan and Peru and is a prelude to the Australians' 2012 London Olympic Games Asian qualifiers where they will face Yemen on June 19 and 23.
"I've been involved in three camps over the last couple of months, two in Canberra and one in Melbourne," Pavlovic said.
"They were pretty intense but I really enjoyed them and I'm really pleased that the effort I put in has been rewarded."
"I've been training with (Olyroos assistant coach) Paul Okon as well as attending the camps and I'm sure it will stand me in good stead when I get back to Wellington."
Following three recent training camps for Australian-based players, Olyroos coach Aurelio Vidmar is looking forward to testing his team against Japan in Niigata.
“We finished our local camps well and made plenty of progress but we still have a little way to go in terms of our match fitness," he said.
“This match against the Japanese, who are a quality team, will show us where we are at and what we need to work on.
“Following this tour we will make the necessary adjustments in time for our Olympic qualification matches against Yemen.”
Following this international friendly match, the Qantas Olyroos will return to Australia to prepare for the 2012 London Olympic Games Asian Qualifiers where they will face Yemen on June 19 and 23 at venues yet to be confirmed by the AFC.
