City had to come from behind twice to grab a point in an enthralling encounter.

Nikolai Topor-Stanley stunned the AAMI Park faithful by opening the scoring on three minutes, and Jason Hoffman retook the lead for the Jets with 20 minutes still on the clock..

But a Daniel Arzani penalty (43') and a strike by Vidosic (82') saw Warren Joyce's men keep within striking distance of Newcastle on the ladder.

And it could have been better for City - Ross McCormack denied a fairytale farewell, with a stunning clearance off the line Steven Ugarkovic deep in stoppage time.

"I think we were probably the better team without looking at it back," Vidosic told Fox Sports post match. "They probably had a few chances but I think we created more.

"(We) hit the crossbar, had a chance cleared off the line at the end, and just a little bit of sloppiness with the two goals that we gave away.

"But look credit to them, they're a very good team, they're second for a reason.

"Tonight we probably slipped up an opportunity to catch them and put pressure (on them) but there's still plenty of games to go and we'll keep working hard and be ready for Brisbane the following Sunday."

After Topor-Stanley headed in a floated cross from Patito Rodriguez, Harrison Delbridge looked like he had the perfect reply on the half hour but his goal was disallowed.

Then a lunging tackle by Daniel Georgievski late in the half brought down Stefan Mauk inside the box and City were right back in the mix.

Rising star Arzani, 19, was cool as you like as he stepped up to the spot to fire home the equaliser.

City had the better of the second half but it was Ernie Merrick's men who struck first.

Andrew Nabbout's shot on goal proved too hot for goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis to gather and Hoffman was on the spot to tuck away the rebound.

The goal - Jets 39th of the season - makes it the highest scoring A-League campaign for the Hunter outfit.

Luke Brattan then conjured the perfect delivery for Vidosic at the back post, who nodded into the bottom corner to make it 2-2.

"When it comes in that good you've just got to put your head to it, and it makes my job really easy," said Vidosic who has scored three goals in his two game for City.

"Awesome delivery, and very very happy to score again, but unfortunately it wasn't for the three points tonight."

City remain in third and just four points shy of the Jets.
