Striker Mark Viduka could return to spearhead Newcastle's bid for Barclays Premier League safety at Birmingham on Monday evening.
The 32-year-old Australian has not started a league game since January 2 because of a combination of calf and hamstring injuries, and will be joined by Joey Barton after he missed last weekend's trip to Liverpool.
However, midfielder James Milner is likely to be sidelined for three weeks with the foot injury he suffered at Anfield, while Shay Given (groin), Emre (calf) and Stephen Carr (hamstring) are still missing.
Provisional squad: Harper, Forster, Beye, Enrique, Taylor, Faye, Cacapa, Edgar, Butt, N'Zogbia, Duff, Barton, Geremi, Owen, Smith, Martins, Viduka, Carroll.
