The Brazilian coach led Iraq to an unexpected victory at the 2007 Asian Cup and will take up the reins for a second time after leaving for a spell at Iranian outfit Sepahan.

The 55-year-old will preside over Iraq's participation in next year's Gulf Cup in Oman and the Confederations Cup in South Africa

"Vieira has signed a one-year contract with the Iraqi FA," Iraq Football Association president Hussain Saeed told a press conference on Wednesday.

"The coach will meet the national team committee in the FA and will discuss all the requirements of the national team.

"Vieira has named two of his assistant to join him at the team.

"The Brazilian coach will lead Iraq in the forthcoming Gulf Cup in Oman next year and the FIFA Confederations Cup in South Africa."

The Iraqi government will pay the salaries of the coach and one member of his technical staff, it was revealed.

"The Youth and Sports ministry will be paying the fees," government spokesman Ali Al Dabbagh revealed. "The contract will be for 12 months and it includes also the salary of one of Vieira's assistants.

"The negotiations were very hard but eventually things came to a happy ending."

Vieira admitted it was "honour" to accept the offer to take charge of the team for a second time following his two-month stint in 2007.

"I'm happy to return to Baghdad and Iraq national team," he said.

"It's a great honour for me to come to Iraq and meet all Iraqi football fans and officials.

"We will continue the work that I started before winning the Asian Cup.

"This is a big step for me and for sport in Iraq and hopefully I can help football in Iraq to regain its position."

Vieira's first game in charge will be a charity match against a European select XI on October 6.
